Wednesdays with Donna Hay - Easy Apple Tart

Don't be fooled by the title of this post - this was supposed to be an Easy Apple Tart, but it didn't turn out that way for me.

The trouble for me is that the puff pastry did not puff at all.  Was it because the kitchen was hot and the pastry oozed into itself?  Was it making the scores in the edges of the pastry that bound the layers together so they didn't puff?  Or was it the egg wash that may have run over the edges and stuck the layers shut?

Whatever it was, I was glad that there was barely anything in these tarts, because I ate the apple off them and threw out the pastry, which remained resolutely as flat as a tack and tasted like cardboard.

Go visit Kayte, Chaya and Margaret to see if they had better luck.

Next week:  Bacon and Roasted Tomato Omelette - join us if you like.

Sorry to hear the puff pastry didn't puff. At least you salvaged the apples!

shame about the pastry but sometimes I find that puff pastry just doesn't behave as it should - glad the apple tasted good

Oh no, you poor ting about the pastry. Was the pastry very cold before it was baked in a super hot oven?

I am off to make this and I have trepidations.

I will let you know how it comes out.

I made mine and it did puff so maybe your pastry was defective.

I found this recipe but stuffed into muffin tins. I think that would have been a lot better. It certainly looks better.

Interesting, the heat might have been a reason. I find when we are in our summer weather that it is very challenging to work with some of the dough. At least the apples were salvageable.

Thanks to all - not sure what the problem was, but will try this one again sometime, as who doesn't love apples and sugar and cinnamon and pastry?

I buy frozen puff pastry--making it scares me!

Duckie, sadly, this was bought puff pastry.

Hmmm...puff pastry and I have had issues in the past a time or two. I haven't made it yet...I hope to, though, so at some point this post will pop up and I can weigh in on the whole thing. Sorry about the delay in posting, between being ill for a week and a half and gone out of state for six days, things have gotten completely out of hand here and I am trying to catch up...each thing in its own time.

Oh no! I bet the apples were tasty anyway.

It's so frustrating when you spend time making something and it doesn't turn out the way you expected. At least you were able to eat the apples!

It looks like a beautiful tart, what a shame about the puff pastry!
