FFWD - Recipe Swap Onion "Carbonara"

Does this look like pasta to you?  It does to me, so I can only assume that is where the dish got its name from.  However, don't be fooled - this week's French Friday with Dorie recipe is for creamed onions with bacon.

I made a half batch and used it as a side dish with my meals this week.  It tastes pretty good, but it won't be on rotation at my place because of the cream.  (I used light cream, but I am fully aware that this still does not make it virtuous.)

To see what the other Doristas thought of this dish, visit the LYL section of the website.

What a clever dish - it definitely does pass as pasta!

How interesting! Do the onions get really soft? :)

Haha - I thought the same re the cream being much "worse" for you than the carbs of the spaghetti! I did love this one though :)

Hi Lorraine, yes, the onions do get quite soft.

I didn't even pretend to be virtuous and just went whole hog with heavy cream - which is probably why Joe liked it so much :-)

It did have that pasta look, didn't it?

Have a great weekend.

That is the only downside...cream and butter.

You too Cher.

This is a keeper for sure. Bacon, cream, what's
not to love. Merry Christmas to you.

Yours really looks like pasta,,, nice cutting job. I think the steaming made the onions less strong than they usually are when sautéed?

This recipe was full of surprises and I really liked it. But diet-friendly it is not.

This was an adventure for all of us. So glad it turned out so (surprisingly....) well. Guess with the folks who were exchanging recipes (Patricia Wells, Dorie, etc) it really couldn't have been bad !!

I liked this one but added the spaghetti....I had pasta and cream and bacon. Had it two days in a row actually! Guess I'd better eat better for a few days or work out harder:) While I loved it I agree with you that its not the kind of food we eat on a weekly basis! Happy holidays to you and yours!

It might not be virtuous, but it did taste good. I hope that you have a wonderful holiday!

Not on my rotation either, but different. But cream, Parm, and butter. Oh, yeah!

We ate it as a light main course - it got a thumbs up as a great gluten-free dish. Virtuous it's not, though. Have a great holiday!
