TWD - Devilish Shortcakes
Have you ever looked at a recipe and gone, hmmm, I am not sure about this? I have many times - and sometimes I have been pleasantly surprised, other times, not so much. So It was for me with this week's Tuesday with Dorie pick. Our host, Tania of Love Big, Bake Often, chose Dorie's Devilish Shortcakes.
Devilish Shortcakes are effectively big chocolate scones, that you can fill with cream and fruit, or in my case, raspberry ripple icecream and dulce de leche. I wasn't really sure about a chocolate-flavoured scone, but ultimately, these are pretty inoffensive. However, a good tip from Caitlin in the forum is that these shortcakes do not taste good plain because they are not sweet. This turned out to be true - in my half batch, there is only 1/4 cup of sugar for 7 shortcakes. Caitlin's other good tip was to only make these shortcakes with 1/4 cup of dough, not the 1/3 cup suggested by Dorie. I found that 1/4 cup of dough gave me fairly big shortcakes, so I am glad that I didn't go any bigger.
I didn't love these shortcakes, but they were OK - ultimately, they turned out how Dorie said they would, and tasted just fine. However, I don't think I'll make them again.
Thanks to Tania for hosting us this week. She will have the recipe, as will Dorie's book. To check out what the other TWD members thought of this recipe, visit the TWD blogroll.

I just love your honesty: "They're basically big chocolate scones." Love how blunt you are! I hate people who try to sugarcoat things!
Hmm...a chocolate scone with not much sweetness? Not sure if I'll try this. Great post though!
Im passing on this one..to much crap in the house and I don't want any junk in my trunk!
They sure look good..to bad they didn't taste that way!
I'm with you. I'm not sure chocolate scones would do it for me. I think I have had too many fabulous scones with jam and cream. The thing about trying different recipes though is that often you hit on something unbelieveably good!
But Cakelaw I think they look nice!! But I understand you, sometimes we dont one repeat a recipe x gloria
I feel a bit unsure about chocolate scones but I am sure that the raspberry ripple icecream and dulce de leche would be an excellent filling - maybe you just needed a good chocolate sauce over it
I was thinking vanilla icecream and a ganoch drizzle. Could be excellent!
Oooh chocolate shortcakes! Now that's a brilliant idea. But a shame that you weren't wowed-it sounded like a great idea!
Sounds like you found the perfect pairing in raspberry ripple ice cream! I think I'll save making these for a warmer day.
i liked these, but i'm kind of searching for ideas on how to use the rest of them up. not my usual reaction to a twd recipe. :)
That ice cream sounds fantastic! Sorry you didn't love these - they look great, though! :)
It's too bad they weren't that great. I'm always so happy when i'm 'wowed' by an iffy recipe. They couldn't be all bad, though - there was dulce de leche on them! :)
Happy Tuesday!
Inoffensive, eh? That makes me glad I took a pass on these. I think I've joined too many bake-along groups and I'm getting a bit behind. Your shortcakes look perfect, and your accompaniments sound lovely, as pretty much anything slathered in dulce de leche is a winner. Did you take them in to work?
:)
Hi Mary, you know me too well - the only one with icecream and dulce de leche was the one in the photo. I took the other 6 to work and slathered cherry jam on them before squirting on some Dairy Whip, popping on the top and cutting them in half vertically so that they went further. They were actually better this way, I think.
Not sweet enough? Add dulce de leche! I like how you roll :D
I decided to go the breakfast/brunch route with these, spreading on whipped cream cheese and cherry butter. Because the shortcakes are less sweet, it is a nice contrast.
Sorry that it did not come as you expected...and sure there are many time that I have the same feeling :-)
The shortcake looks yummy with the ice cream! I like how you described them as "inoffensive." We enjoyed them, but I wouldn't rush to make them again.
A ho-hum Dorrie recipe? I'm shocked, but relieved to know that even she is human.
Although, I doubt that there is much in this world that a good dollop of dulce de leche can't fix!
Your giant sandwich looks good! These definitely sound like something not to be eaten plain.
i am totally with you on how plain tasting scones are. I guess we just have to take things into our own hands and frost like there is no tomorrow! LOL
Actually, I thot of them as big chocolate biscuits. Good with Ice cream. And dulce de leche. Perfect!!!!
Your shortcakes look perfect-love the flavor combo you used!
