Our TWD challenge this week was to make Dorie's Brownie Buttons, chosen by our host, Jayma, of Two Scientists Experimenting in the Kitchen.
Now these buttons look small but elegant in the book, and I was looking forward to making them. I used the orange zest suggested in the recipe, and then also used Whittaker's orange chocolate to up the orange factor.
Unfortunately, the finished product just didn't do it for me. There were not many buttons (16), and in the tiny morsels, I really didn't taste the orange that much. I also didn't like the straight white chocolate glaze on top - it looked pretty, but it I am not a white chocolate fan, so I found its fatty flavour a little jarring. Sorry Dorie, after the fantabulous banana cake last week, this recipe did not light my fire.
That said, taste is a subjective thing - after I initially wrote this post, I brought the brownie buttons into work, and my colleagues loved them, so much so that they did not go outside the legal team. They identified the jaffa (choc-orange) flavour without any prompting from me, and raved about them. So hey, what do I know??
You will find the recipe for the buttons on Jayma's site, and can check out how the other TWD members fared at the TWD blogroll.

I didnt think these were worth the effort either to be honest. Using whittakers orange chocolate was a great idea.
What the heck time is it on your side of the world? It's only 6pm on Monday here, yet I'm reading your post. ;)
I all wasn't in love with these buttons, but I thought it was because I used semi-sweet chocolate instead of bittersweet. Still, it was fun to try something new!
Those must be delightful! I'm a big fan of Brownies!
Cheers,
Rosa
We skipped the white chocolate here. I'm not a fan either. The orange was pretty minimal.
Hi Tammy, nope - same amount of washing up as for a full pan of brownies :)
LOL Clivia - as I type, it is around 9.30am on Tuesday.
Hi Rosa, you may have loved these - my colleagues did, but not me :(
Hi Jules, I know - I am a Hepburn tribute Brownie fan.
The orange chocolate sounds delicious! At least your colleagues appreciated these, even if they weren't your favorite.
Too bad you didn't like them. At least the co-workers loved them!
"Never apologize..." :) I wasn't a fan either, but there's no judging taste!
Well bummer you didn't like them but at least the coworkers enjoyed them so it wasn't a total loss. They're so cute!
I'm on the fence about making these (they're brownies, normally that wouldn't require any thought but I've been busy). Sorry they weren't your favorite, but you're right, last week's banana bundt would be hard to top!
OK, let me kill two entries with one finger..lol Those sausage rolls below are KILLING my tummy, salivaru glands, and just about every other sense in my body! I LOVE sausage rolls, so it's a must try for me :)
Secondly, although you didn't flip over the brownie buttons, I, like your coworkers, would have devoured them happily, and probably loved them, although I'm not sure I would have identified the Jaffa :P Regardless, beautiful job(s), savory and sweet, as always :)
Awww, too bad you didn't like these. 3 Points per brownie is actually not too bad....
These were nice, but I must say they don't beat the quintuple chocolate brownies :)
Sorry these brownie buttons didn't light your fire! I kind of had to light my own fire by drizzling more bittersweet chocolate over the white because I'm not a fan of white chocolate either.
This definitely seems like it was one of those "love 'em or hate 'em" kind of weeks. I loved them, but I've read numerous reviews similar to yours. Yours are cute as a button, though!
Those look delicious, even if they weren't your fav!
Did your brother's puppy enjoy the ball?
I put a bit more batter in the muffin tins, and baked them for 12 minutes.
They were wonderful.
Hi Jill, I always think if someone else likes it, then it is just me.
Hi Wendy, absolutely - it made their day!
Hi Caitlin, too true.
Hi Tracey, they are cute - just not for me :(
Hi Leslie, you never know - you may love them, as a lot of others did.
Thanks LisaMichelle. I will make the sausage rolls again :)
Hi Marthe, you're right on that - I did Weight Watchers once, and 3 points is not so bad. The quintuple chocolate ones sound wonderful!
Hi Lori, the extra layer of bittersweet sounds like a good idea.
Hi Cathy, there is no accoutning for taste - these weren't for me, but my colleagues ate them all between the 2 of them :)
Hi Duckie, thanks - and he did!!
Sounds like a good idea Tanya - more bang for your brownie with more batter.
They look wonderful. I'm sorry you didn't love them but glad your office mates did.
They look perfect! I felt the same way about these, but my boyfriend brought them to a gathering and they were gobbled up. That banana cake was so good!
They look beautiful!
I'm sorry you didn't love them.
Please tell me what you eat every Tuesday?
Too bad they weren't your thing, but they look just fine and since the othrs liked them...
I did double the recipe, thus I put the zest of a whole orange. It was pretty obvious in mine. Overnight, the taste even got more obvious. I remember "chocolate and zucchini" mentioning that chocolate cakes (or baked goods in general) taste much better if you let it sit overnight. That's how I usually gauge my chocolate goodies. Brownies look good, and I always count on my office people to devour everything! LOL! Keep baking!
I agree, for me these were just okay. Good but not great. I'm glad your coworkers enjoyed them, though.
I love these Cakelaw are so cute and yummy!! Gloria
I always find it a strange situation when I make something I'm indifferent to yet others love it. On the one hand I'm pleased it's appreciated, but then I can't help thinking that they're wrong!
They look pretty good to me and I like white choc so would be very happy with the topping!
Sorry to hear that you didn'tlike them. But it sounds like your colleagues lapped them up! :D
I adore that combo of choc and orange and your little buttons look fab!!
