TWD - Sour Cream Pumpkin Pie and Normandy Apple Tart

The last set of recipes for Tuesday with Dorie for November are truly fall delights (for those in the US), chock full of pumpkin and apples.

Our first selection came from Judy of Judy's Gross Eats, who chose Dorie's Sour Cream Pumpkin Pie:

There was an option to make a banana version by placing sliced banana in the base of the tart shell - I took Dorie up on this, as I had an aged banana to use up:

There was too much filling for one pie - I filled a 9" tartshell, and made two smaller 4" tarts, and still had filling left over.  I recommend cutting down on the filling quantity by half.

I enjoyed this pie - it was smooth and sweet.  However, as Australians are not familiar with pumpkin pie, it caused quite a stir in the kitchen at work.  Someone called out, "Has anybody tried some of that cake in the kitchen?  It looks weird."  Hmmm, the poor boy has trouble identifying the difference between cakes and tarts, let alone identifying that it was pumpkin.  One clever girl did identify that it was a pumpkin pie, and someone  else worked out that there was banana in the bottom.  It was very entertaining for me.

Our second dish was Normandy Apple Tart, chosen by Tracey of Tracey's Culinary Adventures:

This tart was quite unusual in that the filling was apple puree, rather than sliced apple, and sliced apple was then arranged decoratively on top.  The end result was rather pretty, like a sunray:

This tart was nice (hey, how can lots of sweetened apple be bad?), but I prefer a traditional apple pie filled with apple slices.  Here's a peek inside:

I hope you enjoyed this week's recipes.  To see what the other TWDers thought, visit the LYL section of the TWD website.

It's funny us Aussies are funny about using pumpkin in desserts but in the US they are in love with it. I think pumpkin works so well in desserts. I am still yet to try a pumpkin pie. Tried pumpkin cake. I like the idea of adding banana to it. Sounds great.

I have to agree..pumpkin pie just sounds weird (ha, us Aussies are all agreeing here). But yours looks nice.
As for the apple pie..it is making me drool!! I've always wanted to make it and the way you've cut the apple is gorgeous. Thanks for sharing 2 great recipes.

I think I would like to admire the pretty apple tart and taste the intriguing pumpkin tart with banana - great pies for November if you live in the other side of the world and they probably aren't so bad to eat with some of the driving rain we've had lately!

Both look wonderful! When my daughter lived in Australia I sent her a 'Thanksgiving' package complete with the makings for a pumpkin pie!
I'm terribly behind on my TWD posts. I better get baking.

Both of your desserts look scrumptious!
It's interesting how people perceive what things taste like if they don't know the ingredients...I can see how pumpkin could me mistaken for banana. :D

both look nice. i love the reactions to the pumpkin pie. i remember having a hard time finding tinned pumpkin (which is what we usually use in baking sweets) when we lived in sydney. i think i had to spend a small fortune on it at the DJs food hall.

Oh my goodness, your apple tart is gorgeous! Adding banana to pumpkin pie isn't anything I've heard of before, but it sounds pretty tasty.

I've been wanting to make an apple tart like that for a while now, but never seem to get around to it. It looks very pretty with the apple slices arranged like that.

Whoever said Americans being in love with pumpkin was right - I just made some pumpkin bread (a quick bread) this afternoon. Kids can't get enough of it. All the flavor of pumpkin pie, but with different texture and the ability to hold a single piece in your hand. :)

I've never tried banana with pumpkin, though. Could make an interesting quick bread at the very least. I really encourage anyone not familiar with pumpkin pie to give it a try. A truly delicious treat.

And yes, I also love the look of your apple tart. Food mixed with artistic flair.

I had several slices of pumpkin pie over the Thanksgiving holiday. However, I know quite a few Americans (my mom included) who don't like pumpkin pie. I don't know what's wrong with them--it's definitely one of my favorites! (Especially with a good dollop of whipped cream...)

Great deal getting both done...I especially love that apple tart, why didn't I make that one??? I made the pumpkin and it was good, but now I think I need to look at making the apple one as well.
