FFWD - Simplest Breton Fish Soup

For our very first French Friday with Dorie for 2015, the recipe was Simplest Breton Fish Soup.

The recipe calls for mussels in the shell and fish, but my supermarket only had mussels as part of a marinara mix, so that is what I used.  This is why I also have calamari and prawns in my soup.

For the stock, I dissolved some shrimp paste  in boiling water.

I really enjoyed this soup - I did not expect to, but it was really good.

Happy New Year!

Shrimp paste in boiling water for the stock, how creative. Actually it is brilliant as it is something we all have readily available and you have to plan ahead to make fish stock (though I haven't seen Dorie's recipe). This is a fresh looking soup, perfect for this time of year and sometimes improvisation of ingredients can add to the recipe (eg calamari and prawns as well as mussels would be lovely). This presents so well :D

Shrimp paste sounds like a delicious (and simple) option for the fish stock. I think this recipe lends itself to all kinds of seafood so your marinara mix seems perfect. Happy New Year, Gaye!

I doubt Bill would touch this with a 10 foot pole, but I have a feeling I'd be happy to eat his portion. Happy New Year!!! xo

What a great recipe and I think it's good you worked with what you had available. It's hard to believe the Dorie season is up and running again - where did the time go! xx

Hey, nice thought about the fish stock. I couldn't get any fresh fish or fresh shell fish in my area at all so will wait until I arrive in California this week. Yours looks very good - I happen to be a calamari fan so would enjoy that addition. Very nice job, Gaye. Happy New Year

Looks great and I'm glad you enjoyed it! You really captured the essence of the Breton soup, it sounds like, with the mixture of whatever was handy seafood-wise! What fun! Happy New Year!
