As a surprise on the Friday before Valentines Day, Tim took me to dinner at Il Solito Posto, an Italian restaurant off Collins Street in Melbourne. Il Solito Posto is at basement level, so it is a short walk down a flight of wooden stairs into the heart of the restaurant.
We started off with a drink at the bar, as we didn't have a booking, but it only took 5 minutes or so before we were shown to our booth seating:
To start off, we ordered the antipasto della casa ($19.50) pictured at the top of this post. We wisely shared the serve for one so that we could save room for the rest of our dinner. This share plate comprised anchovies, arancini, olives, buffalo mozzarella, pickled zucchini, toasts and dip. It was delicious.
For main, I ordered the veal ragu with penne pasta and a tomato and rosemary ragu ($26.50):
This was a very tasty dish.
Tim ordered polpette di manzo ($27.50) - pork and beef meatballs, filled with smoked mozzarella, braised in tomato sugo with soft polenta and a rocket and parmesan salad on the side:
This was also a tasty dish.
In addition, we ordered green beans, a daily special, as a side ($8):
Tim loves tiramisu, so it comes as no surprise that he ordered the tiramisu ($16) for dessert:
This apparently tasted as good as it looks.
I ordered the gelato ($12) - salted caramel, chocolate chip and passionfruit:
The gelato was served with a tuile, and my favourite flavour was the passionfruit.
The wait staff were friendly and informative, and were prompt with our requests.
Il Solito Posto was a lovely dining experience, and a nice surprise for pre-Valentines Day.
