WWDH - Chinese barbecue pork

For Wednesday with Donna Hay this week, I chose Chinese barbecue pork from Modern Classics I.

It was a rather disappointing dish for me in a number of ways. First, I ran out of time and the supermarket where I went to buy the pork only had pork stir fry strips.  Being out of time, I decided to make do, but I am sure that this dish would have been better with the thicker pork strips (2" wide) called for in the recipe.

In the end, I was also not a fan of the strong aniseed flavour from the Chinese five spice powder.  This dish is probably not going to be repeated in my house.

I served my pork with stir fry vegetables and boiled brown rice:

It looks pretty good, but I wasn't a fan.

  2. It looks good. Too bad it wasn't what you expected, I've had that happen more than once. The veggies look good also!

  3. I guess there just has to be some not so good meals as well, Gaye. Well, at least you learned you're not too fond of too much aniseed:)

    Thanks for sharing, Gaye...

  4. I love your honesty as we all occasionally have disappointing dishes. Five spice can overpower a dish but you made the most of it and that is what a great, creative cook will do. Well saved!

  5. I am sorry, you did not like this. We loved it but my soup was a meal in a bowl, made with chicken, noodles and spinach. I was blaming the ginger for the weird taste but it was the anise. We still liked it a lot, though.

  7. Yes, I think aniseed is an acquired taste. (That explains liquorice, doesn't it?) I'm glad you tried it out anyway. What I liked about the recipe when I read it was that it was very simple.

  8. Sorry you weren't a fan of this one. I loved it. I made my own 5-spice with less anise is probably why.

  10. I love aniseed flavour but generally when it is quite mild and combined with other flavours (ie not ouzo :P).
