FFWD - Spice crusted tuna - err, ocean trout

For French Fridays with Dorie this week, we are cooking - fish!  What a surprise, eh.   You'd never have guessed.  My doctor told me to get more fish into my diet; well, FFWD is making that easy at the moment.

Our recipe this week is spice crusted tuna.  To give you an idea of the spices in the recipe, you can see the ingredients list here.

So, you may ask - why have you made spice-crusted ocean trout when the recipe is for spice-crusted tuna?  Well, apparently in my suburb, tuna is either not available or all sold out at present.  I tried at the supermarket and at the specialty fish shop - no dice.  What was priceless was asking the assistant at the specialty fish shop what she thought would be a good substitute for the tuna, only to have her stare at me blankly with an open mouth.  I spared her the pain of thinking and chose my own fish.

I really quite liked this fish dish - it was easy, quick and tasty.  I also made the mango chatini that Dorie suggests as an accompaniment to this dish because I adore mangoes, and it is mango season here.  It was seriously good.  I served the lot with a microwaved sweet potato and some boiled veges (not pictured).  I would definitely make this again - it is simple, fresh and healthy.

To see what the other Doristas though of this dish, visit the LYL section of the FFWD website.

  1. Cardamom, that sounds unique and delicious with the fish. I bet your trout was delicious! It's not easy to find tuna steaks here, but I love it when I do.

  3. Fish always gets a round of applause around here, this looks really good with all those spices. I've never tried microwaving a sweet potato, don't know why I have never thought of that, we eat one a week here, I will try that. It all looks wonderful.

  10. OMG LOL well glad you enjoyed the trout instead! I probably would have gone for salmon or swordfish,... but we all have those days at the market. Miss the markets in Europe where people were very knowledgeable about their counters (at the very least) :)

  11. Too bad you couldn't get tuna. But really the spice crust could accompany many different fish, I think. I really liked the chatini.

  12. You got a great sear on the trout which I think I would like more than the tuna. I live on the East Coast so I couldn't image not being able to get tuna.

  14. I'm so glad to know this worked with ocean trout. I try not to eat too much tuna, and I love ocean trout. Your story about the assistant at the fish counter cracked me up. I've had that experience myself.

  15. Wow- love the thought of using a trout. And too, too funny about the reaction from the fish seller. Good of you to make an executive decision and glad the payoff was such lovely and delicious results !

  16. I really liked this one too. I liked your story about the fishmonger. Sounds like she wasn't the best candidate for that job! I'm happy that this works on other fish though. I don't love cooked tuna, I prefer it as sushi. The mango chatini was good, wasn't it?

  19. We love trout in Colorado. It's a speciality at many of our restaurants. It is a rather bland fish but the thought of using these strong spices on it never entered my mind. Thanks for the idea, Gaye. Your plate looks tasty.

  21. There was no tuna in our neck of the woods either (at least on the day I went shopping for this).
I love trout - my dad used to take me fishing and we would catch them in the lake and cook the over the campfire.
