FFWD - Scallop and Onion Tartes Fines
This week's French Friday with Dorie is a little fishy - it is Scallop and Onion Tartes Fines. Basically, this dish comprises discs of puff pastry baked flat, then topped with caramelised onion, bacon and sliced scallops. The full recipe is available online here.
I liked the caramelised onion with bacon, but I thought that the scallops on top were just weird. The flavours didn't seem to go that well, and the scallop was somewhat overwhelmed by the onion. I would prefer these with no scallops and more bacon.

ReplyDeleteYes, perhaps scallops are a little too delicate for this recipe. I like our local scallops which are quite small and always have the roe attached!! Your tart looks very beautiful!!

ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you didn't like this. I used shrimp instead, and thought it was very tasty. I will admit that the pictures of people's semi-cooked scallops don't look especially enticing. I'd have tried it if I thought my son would eat it, but I'm kind of glad I chose the shrimp route instead.

ReplyDeleteI thought this was just plain odd too. That's why I seared the scallops but it was still strange to eat. Loved the flavours, just the format (stuff on pastry) didn't quite work for me.
ReplyDeleteGood for you for trying this. I think most of us had to be a bit brave on testing this combo. My guys did like it (no way for me- I can't take the texture of scallops, regardless of flavor)but I honestly think they would have preferred plain tartes with bacon onion relish instead. I, on the other hand, love the pastry so much I could literally eat it plain !

ReplyDeleteI'm wishing I could have a bite out of the tarts as intended. There must have been something in the barely cooked scallop that worked well with the onions and bacon. I love all of the ingredients on their own.

ReplyDeleteI agree. The scallops were a bit wasted on this dish, but the bacon-onion mixture was a treat.
ReplyDeleteI really did enjoy this, although I could have eaten the pancetta/ onion mixture all on its own and would have been happy with just that!

I didn't get to these this week, too much going on (and to be honest, I didn't think it sounded that great for the calories involved!). But good work for making the attempt. It sounds like everyone really enjoyed the caramelized onions and bacon...
ReplyDeleteThe flavors didn't blend because they weren't cooked together...is what I am thinking now. Seafood and pork usually go so well together, but they are always cooked together so the fat of pork mixes with the fish and then they blend.

Your tarte fine looks scrumptious - too bad you did not quite enjoy the combination of onions, bacon and seafood but them again, these tarts are probably equally delicious without the thinly slices scallops.

Nothing is wrong with the "more bacon" idea. Personally I think this would have been better as a "small bite" (smaller circle) with just a scallop or shrimp or cheese (melted) on top. Loved the onion-bacon spread.
ReplyDeleteI skipped this one. I had a feeling that it would be kinda "fishy" so I passed. However, I think the idea of putting caramelised onions and bacon on top of flaky pastry sounds extremely good! I love colours of your plate!

DeleteI decided beforehand that raw scallops just would not do so I seared mine and the sweetness matched the sweet onions. Onions and bacon - yum!!
