FFwD - Baked apples filled with fruit and nuts

This week's French Friday with Dorie is practically healthy!  It is baked apples filled with fruit and nuts.

I used a red delicious apple filled with cranberries, apricots and raisins, with a touch of nut "muesli" (walnuts and pecans).  I forgot to baste the apple with the cider while it was in the oven, but oh well!  It still tasted just fine.

I served mine with a dollop of Greek yoghurt, and it was good:

To see what the other Doristas thought, check out the LYL section of the FFwD website.

  1. Yours looks so good. I had a bit of a "time" with mine this week - I blame the jetlag! Still tasted ok though!

  3. Oh, that looks yummy and healthy!! I've used ginger beer (I think) to bake apples but I love the idea, so simple, of using apple cider.

  5. I think this is one of those dishes that you could torture the heck out of and it would still be delicious!

  9. This was a good one, wasn't it? I forgot to baste mine until I checked it after 45 minutes. A couple of quick bastes got some color on the apple. It was delicious anyhow!

  10. Oh boy do they look yummy! We really enjoyed this recipe, too! I used just plain water with butter and honey as the liquid and they came out lovely! Happy weekend!

  12. Yah, basting every 15 minutes sounded like a bit much. I did it a few times when checking if they were done, but that was about it.

  14. You are so good eating it with yogurt. I had ice cream, but I did have a half of one the next day in my oatmeal.

  15. Your apple looks delightfully browned. I did the basting and mine stayed a little pale. Maybe I needed to add more butter to the pan juice.

  16. I had wondered about the basting. Sadly, I did baste a few times but since I was using cider vinegar instead of cider...it would have been great if I didn't baste :) Love the cross section photo so I can see how you cored those apples without cutting through the bottom. Lovely job ~

  17. Wasn't this delicious. Hard to mess up, basting or no basting. Like your combo of cranberries, apricots and raisins with the nut muesli. Did you make that yourself? I used creme fraiche (leftover from New Years) but your Greek yoghurt sounds good also and I always have it on hand.

    1. Hi Mary, yes, I made the nut muesli myself from my naturopath's recipe.

  18. Practically healthy - that describes it well. I"ll be making this again, for sure. I forgot to baste it until the last twenty minutes or so, but they didn't seem to suffer.
