FFwD - Tomato-Cheese Tartlets

This week's French Fridays with Dorie recipe is tomato-cheese tartlets.  These really couldn't be simpler - rounds of puff pastry, slathered with olive tapenade, topped with rounds of tomato and mozzarella, seasoned with salt and pepper, and drizzled with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.  You can also decorate these with fresh basil leaves, but at $3 a bunch, my tartlets can stay undecorated.

Verdict: tasty, but not exciting.
To see what the other Dorie participants thought of these tartlets, visit the LYL section of the website.

  1. I think this was one of Dorie's non-recipe recipes - but a great concept and I think the fun will come in playing around with it :-)
    Have a great weekend.

I think you and dorie participants really need a name like Dorie's Darlings! (Or have I been watching too many quiz shows!)

  4. I was very thankful for an easy one this week and I ended up really loving this one, particularly because I could see it being so versatile. I bet there are a million ways to change this recipe up with some different toppings. Sorry to hear that it didn't excite you though.

  5. I kinda like these non recipe recipes. I end up doing them pretty close to book or the assignments but then later the inspiration takes over and I get to clean up all kinds of odds and ends from the fridge. I'm sure this will be no exception as I always have some puff in the freezer.

  6. LOL...yeah, it's a lot easier when you can walk into the garden and snip some basil for garnish :) Glad you enjoyed~

  11. Sorry these were just ok for you! Yours do look delicious! They really are better as a seasonal food! I would never pay 3 dollars a bunch for basil…I was lucky enough to pick it off my deck! These were a big hit in my house.

  14. I enjoyed these, but I also liked them more with fresh pesto, and I had some garden tomatoes on hand, so that helped. Yours look delicious!

  16. Good call on nixing the basil. I was only able to find a good sized bunch for $2 at the farmers market, but I knew it would be more expensive for less quantity at the store. Great tart!

  17. My garden's in full force now, so the garnish was easy to come by. I think this particular recipe is more exciting in summer, just as a caprese salad's at its best then.

  19. I wish I could share some of my Basil with you. I can't use it all, growing like a weed in this weather, but I do understand that it's Winter down under. I liked your tartlets just as shown, however. They are good albeit just a caprese on pastry. However, there are so many things you can do with this one basic puff pastry idea, that's what I liked about this week's recipe choice.

  20. Cutie little tartlets! If I had to buy the basil I probably would have left it off too but luckily I bulked up this spring at the farmer's market so I have a bunch growing on my deck. Sorry these didn't wow you but maybe the scallop salad will blow your mind!

  21. They really were incredibly easy weren't they! I've made versions of these in the past but this was the first time I added the balsamic and I loved it!
