BWJ - Oasis Naan

This week's Baking with Julia challenge is Oasis Naan.  These nan really couldn't be easier to make - there's not much to them apart from flour, water and yeast, and chopped scallions, caraway seeds and salt for the topping.

They are very non-attention seeking for a bread - once the dough is mixed, it sits for 2 hours to look after itself while it rises, then it is shaped and baked on a pizza stone for around 8 minutes - done.  I only made a half recipe to get four naan.

The naan taste good, but I was disappointed because they are nothing like naan that I would get at my local Indian restaurant, which tend to be light, pillow and could almost float away.

To see what the other BWJ members thought of these naan, visit the LYL section of the BWJ website.

  1. I like the organized circle pattern :-)
I thought these were nice, but this wouldn't become my go to recipe. It seemed to be missing something...

  2. I'm not sure how these are made, but last time I made naan I actually pan fried the dough. It gave it that crispy on the outside, soft on the inside texture you get at a restaurant.

  3. I love naan and was surprised at your comment about them not being light as they look light in the photo

  5. These look lovely - and I'm curious to hear you didn't like them as much as Indian restaurant varieties. I don't like Indian restaurant varieties, but these appeal - perhaps they would match my tastes better!

  8. I have yet to eat at an Indian restaurant so I have little comparison. My naan were tough and chewy. I liked them stretched thin. The day old one I toasted and spread a little butter on it--yummy.
I think this simple recipe has many possibilities.

  11. Oh what a shame that they weren't like the restaurant ones as I adore those and was hoping to find a recipe for them :)
