This week's Tuesday with Dorie recipe, selected by Jessica of My Baking Heart, is Chocolate Spice Quickies. As the name suggests, these are little chocolate flavoured cookies, containing crushed almonds and not a great deal of spice (I used cloves).
The title of this recipe would imply that they are quick to make, but this is not true. You need to chill the dough for 4 hours, and there is a bit of fussing around with melting chocolate and shaping logs along the way. As I started making these at 7.30pm on the night before posting day, needless to say I froze my logs for an hour or so instead of chilling them.
These cookies were OK, but not a knockout. They are definitely pleasant, but they didn't have the added zing to make me love them.
Cake law these cookies look delicious, gloria
ReplyDeleteThey look quite nice! I'm not a big fan of chocolate and spice, so I skipped these. I wonder why they're called quickies?
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear that after all that work they were "blah"! You had me interested with the chocolate and the almonds and spices.
ReplyDeleteYour cookies turned out great, but after my disaster with Dorie's pecan sandies, I'll be holding off on trying another of her cookie recipes for awhile.
ReplyDeleteThanks Gloria.
ReplyDeleteJill, I think Dorie's perpsective is that because you can freeze the logs and whip them out to bake as needed, this is "quick" - not for me!
Hi Lauren, they were OK - pleasant in the same way that a packet of biscuits from the supermarket might be.
YC, sorry to hear that your first Dorie cookie experience was negative. I can only exhort you to try again on another recipe in your own time - I have found most of her recipes to be very good.
Oh the name does suggest that they are quick but chilling for 4 hours is quite a bit longer than normal cookie dough!
ReplyDeleteI did not bother to chill the dough. I figured all the ingredients were going to make a yummy cookie so I just mixed and dropped;) They turned out super yuummy! ALl though they don't look as good as yours! Sorry they were not a knock out for you. I liked them but most likely I won't make them again.
ReplyDeleteQuickies is an odd name for any biscuit but even odder if they aren't quick to make - maybe it means they are eaten quickly :-)
ReplyDeletehi cakelaw, first time here, tho i am not an expert baker or cake maker, i do love to see beautiful looking cakes.. which surely taste delicious too...(in response to your blog name)
ReplyDeleteanyway your cookies looks very appetizing, would love to try this out, thanks for sharing.
do visit my blog, would love to read a comment from you too.have a nice day
The look is different for those that waited the four hours and those that didn't. Yours look supper. I only wish, you would have liked them more.
ReplyDeleteI love spiced cookies and I bet these tasted fantastic!
ReplyDeleteI have not made these yet but when I do I'll add a little orange peel and sandwich ice cream between two.
ReplyDeleteHave a great day.
These look similar to the World Peace cookies! Sorry they weren't stellar for you!
ReplyDeleteYour cookies look delicious even if they didn't taste as good as they looked. I did increase the amount of spice, and I think you can play with the flavorings quite a bit.
ReplyDeleteThey look really pretty! I like making these type of cookies during the holidays especially with the spices.
ReplyDeleteWhat a pretty plate, the cookies look good too! I felt the same way about these. We're eating them, but they won't be made again.
ReplyDeleteI agree that these cookies are crying out for a variation that packs more flavour. Yours look delicious!
ReplyDeleteOh my I am loving this cookies. This is way tooo tempting.
ReplyDeleteNot a hit here either. Even tho' they were chocolate. But they sure are pretty!!
