FFwD - Paris Mushroom Soup
Howdy and welcome to the first French Friday with Dorie for this year. We are all making the same recipe again, and this week, it is Paris Mushroom Soup.
I would be lying if I said that I wanted to make this. As I have mentioned before, I am not a particular fan of soup, and a soup with raw veges in the bottom and made of mushrooms cooked in chicken stock doesn't sound very appealing.
However, I divided the recipe by 6 and made soup for one - and I actually didn't mind it. I won't be making it again, but as a once-off experience, it was fine.
Here are the mushrooms with onion and garlic frying in the pan:
These are simmered with herbs (in my case, dried tarragon), chicken stock and white wine, then pureed:
I had to add more water to the soup, as mne was a little thick. The soup is then reheated, and then poured over a whole raw mushroom (in my case, two) and chives. You are also supposed to add a bunch of other things, but in my case, this would have been a total waste:
If you like soup and are a fungus fan, this soup may please your palate. I thought it was just fine, and tasted better than many other soups that I have endured in my lifetime (condensed pea with ham, anyone?).

Your soup for one still looks pretty tasty. I like that you used an immersion blender. (I don't own one). So, pouring the soup over the raw whole mushrooms was what we were supposed to do? I was slightly confused by that, so my sister and I just used the raw "salad" as garnishes. Great post!

ReplyDeleteI have to agree with you on the soup thing. I like chicken soup, and even then i am extremely picky as to what kind (homemade). Split pea...um, i'll be nice :-D

You know what YC, I wasn't quite sure - it seemed weird to me, so maybe this wasn't it. Will have to wait to see what everyone else did!

Hi ebgkid, I'm with ya- split pea soup does not sound good.
Well, this looks great to me, I love mushrooms and I am looking forward to eating this. I was wondering how I was going to make it look attractive in the bowl...you certainly did that well!

ReplyDeleteI'm impressed that you went ahead and made it even though it didn't sound like your cup of tea - if you gave me a recipe with, say, fresh coriander (which I think tastes like soap) - I'd probably find an excuse to duck it. :)
Well done for making something that you weren't 100% keen on! Personally, I adore mushrooms so I think this would be delicious.
ReplyDeleteWhat an unusual sounding soup! I've never tried one with raw vegetables in the bottom. I think I might have had the same reaction as you :)
ReplyDeleteHahahah you always make me smile! You are so nice that you can't bring yourself to actually hate anything. But I get it....I'm the same. Everything still deserves the respect for what it is.....even mushroom soap LOL!

I also didn't make that silly salad either.
From one fungus fan to one non-fungus fan, good for you for giving this a try. I haven't thought about what i'm going to do when there's a recipe that comes up with an ingredients that no one in the family likes (although after the gorgonzola pumpkin flans...my boys are not nearly as trusting as they were before). I'll have to remember to try to make a one serving portion!
ReplyDeleteHow great that you made the soup even though you don't like mushrooms! It's just one of those things - you either like them or not. It looks like your soup turned out tasty. I like the butterfly on your bowl. :)

ReplyDeleteI liked this week's recipe, but then I like mushrooms. Kinda wondering about next week though- I'm feeling the same about that one as you felt about this soup! Yours does look yummy though, to me! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog. Even when you don't love it, don't you find it gratifying to try something out of your comfort zone? Even if it's just to say you did it. I do. Your soup had a much deeper color than mine. I love how browned yours got. Maybe because of the smaller portion, you had less moisture to cook off. Looks lovely!

CL, I too was confused by the salad instruction and finally just decided that the same editor who left out the egg for Speculoos probably worked on this recipe too. I admire you knowing what you like well enough but still trying it as soup for one. Maybe I'll do that with next week's recipe that I just can't get enthused about. Boiled dough with white sauce?
