TWD - Burnt Sugar Icecream
This week's Tuesday with Dorie is a little different in that instead of baking, we were required to make icecream. Our host, Becky of Project Domestication, chose Dorie's Burnt Sugar Icecream for our challenge this week.
This icecream was easy enough to make - it uses the amber caramel base used in many of Dorie's recipes, onto which milk and cream are poured to form a custard, albeit a seething, angry one at the start, before the addition of egg yolks and sugar. The mixture is then chilled and churned, then frozen to form icecream.
I have to say that I wasn't a huge fan of this icecream, despite its gorgeous caramel colour - it really did taste kind of burnt to me. The taste was almost, but not quite, bitter, and as a real sweet tooth, this did not appeal to me. I only made a half batch, as I hadn't a hope of using the whole batch.
Thanks to Becky for hosting us this week and introducing me to something new. Becky will have the recipe on her site. To see what the other TWD members thought of this recipe, visit the TWD blogroll.
Bummer it didn't taste like you expected, it sure looks great! I have to sit this one out..so busy with CASA and my ice cream maker broke about a year ago. I have yet to replace it.
ReplyDeleteOh my, the title alone gives me foodie goose gumps...a most welcome ice cream!
ReplyDeleteWell, it sure looks really wonderful. I made half a batch, too, for prudence sake as I was afraid I would eat way too much of it on my own...like maybe not even tell the guys that I had made it at all...I just love caramel flavored anything. It's freezing now, so we shall see. Yours does look lovely.
ReplyDeleteIt looks nice, and that's a very pretty bowl. I'm wondering how it would be with some chocolate sauce.
ReplyDeleteI found it had a slightly bitter undertone too, but not enough to stop me from eating it! I wish I had thought to make a half batch, but wasn't sure it would work in the ice cream maker. That's a beautiful plate you have your ice cream on!
ReplyDeleteWhat a shame that you didn't enjoy it. I always find that there's often a few seconds between it tasting burnt and really caramelly :)
ReplyDeleteThe ice cream sounds delicious. Sorry to hear it didn't meet your expectations.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous colour - shame about the taste. Burnt sugar can be rather a hit and miss thing - one second too much and it tastes burnt.
ReplyDeletelooks gorgeous - but sounds like the taste was a letdown... that sucks! next week's will be better :)
ReplyDeleteSorry this one didn't thrill you but if you visit Vibi, she dipped hers in chocolate and chopped honey roasted peanuts...that might make it more appealing!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry this wasn't your favorite-I dumped a whole bag of Heath bits into mine-it is REALLY sweet!
ReplyDeleteYour ice cream looks creamy and delicious!
What a bummer that it didn't taste as good as it looks! I love the color of your ice cream! I think mine was a little on the lighter side. Next time I'd like to burn the sugar a little more. Which is weird because I have a sweet tooth too and I love this ice cream!
ReplyDeleteI love the thought of a seething, angry custard. It is out to get revenge, look out!
ReplyDeleteyou have no idea how much i LOVE burnt caramel icecream.
ReplyDeleteit was love at first taste!
this looks like great idea.
Your ice cream looks perfect. I didn't cook my caramel enough, so it didn't taste burned. I was annoyed that it didn't turn out "burned," but it's good that way, too.
ReplyDeleteWhat a shame the taste didn't appeal to you. I have tried burnt butter ice cream but not with burnt sugar. Very intrigued!
ReplyDeleteHome made ice cream is always the best. Pity you didnt quite like the taste but I can understand as I like my ice cream sweetish too!!
