TWD - Mrs Vogel's Scherben
Our TWD host this week is Teanna of Spork or Foon? She has chosen the intriguingly named Mrs Vogel's Scherben as our Dorie recipe for this week. Mrs Vogel was a real person who is the source of this recipe, and "scherben" (love that word!) is the German word for fragments - because this is what these cookies are - fragments of fried dough, dusted with cinnamon sugar and icing sugar.
The biscuits without the sugar dusting are very plain - you could almost dip them in salsa and it would be fine.
Although I loved the name of these biscuits, I didn't really like them that much - I found them to be very plain, even with the sugar. Mrs Vogel's son adores them, so it's just a personal thing.
If you'd like to try these, Teanna will have the recipe. To see what the other TWD bakers thought, go to the TWD blogroll.
They look so cute though! What a shame you didn't like them!
ReplyDeleteI wasn't crazy about them either but the hubs loved them. Yours look much better than mine did!
ReplyDeleteMy boys loved them, I thought they were pretty good too. I baked half (didn't like the baked at all) and fried the rest. The fried ones are the ones that were eaten! :) Sorry you didn't like them, but we can't like them all I guess :)
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, these would be good with salsa if you left the sugar off! Too funny. Too bad you didn't like them, but they look nice!
ReplyDeleteThey look really cute :) They remind me of these polish cookies one of my relatives used to make. Yum!
ReplyDeleteLove the word 'scherben' too! Interesting recipe. Never heard of it.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't too crazy about them at first, but I found them tastier an hour or two later, even though the recipe recommended eating them right away. Maybe it was the very generous amount of icing sugar I coated them with. Hopefully next week's is super-yummy!
ReplyDeleteAhh I think I've tried something similar and yes they're not as amazing as one would hope but I suppose if you have them when young, they're quite amazing and bring back all sorts of good memories! :)
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother used to make these all the time. We loved them! Because she was a baker, there was always dough leftover. And she either made mini banana tarts or made these cookies! Sorry you didn't like them.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for being there for me while I was gone... I appreciate it very much!
ReplyDeleteNow... perhaps I could wish you a Happy New Year over a cup of tea and a couple of those great fried delicacies you made! Bravo!
Ciao ! We all loved them but they are dangerous !
ReplyDeleteWell, you got a lovely photo out of this! We thought they were a great treat for the snowy day when we baked them.
ReplyDeleteI did a rewind recipe this week in place of these. I think they sound good, but there are so many other recipes I want to use my calories for. At least you tried them!
ReplyDeleteYou know what is better?
ReplyDeleteRefrigerator biscuits deep fried.
I agree with your assessment of plainess. Guess that's why we sprinkled so much sugar on them.
ReplyDeleteYour little plate of scherben looks lovely. I burned mine, so I didn't even get to try them. I guess there are worse recipes for that to have happened.
ReplyDeleteYour scherben look delicious!
ReplyDeleteThese cookies look so yummy! I'd love to have one of this!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you didn't like this pick! But thank you so much for frying along with me these week! They were pretty much a vessel for powdered sugar in my eyes! Haha!
ReplyDelete'fragments of fried dough, dusted with cinnamon sugar and icing sugar' got my attention right there! But then I saw your verdict. Hmmm, to try or not to try?
ReplyDeleteloved your write-up! we liked these (although i probably won't try them again), so i guess it is just a personal thing.
ReplyDeleteDear This look so tasty and nice! gloria
ReplyDeleteWell, you could have brought those right over here and the guys would have been more than happy to help you out with eating them...they were eating them as fast as I was frying them! I love the look of yours on that white plate with the lace underneath. Very lovely.
