For Tuesdays with Dorie this week, we have a festive recipe from Baking Chez Moi - a Gingerbread Buche de Noel. Don't you think it's pretty? It looks like a snowy log out in the field - or at least an artistic impression of one. I made this recipe for my team Christmas party - I was happy to have a special occasion to present it.
This recipe has numerous steps. I made the cake one night, and the pecan praline, filling and frosting the next, along with assembly.
Although there were a number of steps to make this cake, none of them were difficult. I have made roll cakes before, but I liked Dorie's tip about using a ruler and paper to get the roll a bit tighter.
The base cake is a gingerbread sponge roll. It is filled with a cream cheese, butter and pecan praline mixture, then topped with a marshmallow frosting and chopped pecan praline. You can find the recipe online here.
I took the tip from some other Doristas to only make half the frosting, and that was plenty. The frosting was very addictive, as was the pecan praline, which proved very simple to make.
Overall, I understand that this cake was a hit. I certainly enjoyed it.
Merry Christmas to all.
Last time I did a roll cake, it didn't come out look so neat. I will definitely try out your tip. Great cake
ReplyDeleteI like that it isn't chocolate like the usual ones (I know I can't believe I just said that :P)
ReplyDeleteBeautifully clean and delicious recipe!

This looks amazing. So impressive! I can't imagine creating something so neat looking if I gave it a go myself.
ReplyDeleteIt looks splendid indeed! I wish I had this on the menu now! :D
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!!! Merry Christmas!!
ReplyDeleteThat is heaps of frosting and probably as much snow as you will get in melbourne - would love a slice as it sounds like great festive fare!
ReplyDeleteYours looks so beautiful! I bet it tasted great as well.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I am making mine for Christmas, and hope it turns out as well as yours!
ReplyDeleteIt does look like a very pretty snowy log...that it tasted so delicious was even better. I wish I had halved the frosting, 3/4 recipe was waaay too much.
ReplyDeleteI bet you were a hit at the party. It is a nice cake to share at a special occasion.
ReplyDeleteI love seeing how well this cake turned out for everyone. Impressive!
ReplyDeleteWonderful looking cake. Dorie's instructions were perfect and made everyone comfortable. Merry
ReplyDeleteChristmas.
I wish I had read the P&Q - or at least scoured for ideas for how to use (quickly) my leftover meringue. The Buche was so tasty - I'm happy it was relatively easy to pull off despite all the steps.
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas, Gaye!
Gorgeous results ! How fun that you could bring this to your work party- not only is it crazy impressive but frankly the whole thing is very addictive and a wee bit dangerous to have hanging around in large quantities :) Merriest of Christmas to you as well !!
ReplyDeleteKudos to you Gaye!!! I've only made one "good" cake roll in my life and it still didn't look as "purty" as yours!!! Did some one say Praline???
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing, Gaye. I sure wouldn't mind a taste right about now:)
It looks delicious! Cheers to a job well done.
ReplyDeleteWishing you a wonderful holiday season.
Beautiful Cake! Happy Holidays :-)
ReplyDeleteWow - you've rolled it so well! I never get that good a spiral
ReplyDeleteWishing you a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year
Oh it is so pretty and very festive. I love the gingerbread version for people like em who can't have chocolate.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to be on your work team if this is any indication of the office goodies! You did great on this Gaye!
ReplyDeletePretty cake. So easy with Dorie's instructions. Great job.
ReplyDeleteI made the full amount of the frosting and used the leftovers to top off my hot chocolate. Yummy!
ReplyDeleteLooks delicious--I like those nice chunks of praline on top. I'm glad to hear that a 1/2 batch of frosting was plenty. I'll do that next time.
ReplyDeleteLooks beautiful, Gaye! Festive indeed!
ReplyDeleteYour cake looks great! How fun that you had a festive occasion to take it.
ReplyDeleteSo pretty! That frosting was very, very addictive!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Buche de Noel. I hope you had a Merry Christmas !!!
ReplyDeletePerfect celebration cake! Yours turned out beautifully. I bet everyone in the office was thrilled.
ReplyDeleteYour icing looks so fluffy! And I'll have to try the ruler method next time !
ReplyDeleteI didn't make this one yet...just not enough time in the season. I will try it as a rewind sometime. Yours is so pretty and I am sure everyone just felt so special that you made it for them. You did a really nice job on it!
