Kiwi Fish, East Melbourne and Fitzroy Gardens

One lazy Sunday afternoon, Tim and I caught a tram to East Melbourne to try the fish and chips at Kiwi Fish, an establishment that has obtained many positive reviews.  As its name suggests, it is operated by New Zealanders, and the Kiwi theme is emphasised by the sale of Kiwi delicacies like L&P.

The Kiwi Fish website claims that "you're welcomed with friendly service".  That didn't quite happen on the day we visited.  There was only one man both cooking and serving customers on our arrival, and he seemed none too keen to be interrupted from his task of chopping vegetables.

The shop is kitted out with some interesting decorations, including these fun café signs:

and autographs of some sports stars:

Tim and I both ordered the lunch special ($14.90) - gummy flake cooked as you want it (I chose grilled), salad (I chose coleslaw), chips and a can of softdrink (in my case, Pepsi Max):

The food came out fairly quickly, and the serve was generous.  We both liked it well enough, but I could not really say I found it better than the countless other fish and chip shops I have visited over the years.  Still, it was fun to go outside the box and try somewhere different for a change.

Afterwards, we walked back into town, passing through the Fitzroy Gardens, with its Tudor Village:

Captain Cook's Cottage:

a very cool ye olde style postbox, recently painted

and the Conservatory:

with its pretty flowers and water feature:

I hadn't been to the Fitzroy Gardens for years, so I really enjoyed our walk.  Afterwards, we saw a movie at Kino (I believe it was Birdman).

It was a perfect way to round out the weekend.

Those chips looks crisp and golden - I would have been tempted to take them out and eat in the fitzroy gardens - love that place and seeing your photos (that letterbox sure is shiny) - though the weather is a bit more chilly lately that it might have been more comfy inside.

Looks like a fun outing! I have to admit, I looked up what L&P is. Beautiful gardens.

Ahh I was hoping that you would be wowed by the fish and chips. I haven't had L&P in ages or pineapple lumps but Afghan cookies are a favourite for me :D

Fun to hear about the Kiwi Fish place and see it, and the food did look good. The gardens, however, were really pretty and I would have loved those!!
