FFwD - Nutella Tartine

This week's French Friday with Dorie recipe is an unlikely combination that I would never have chosen on my own, but which I quite enjoyed as a guilty pleasure.  It is Nutella Tartine.  Initially I conjured up an image of a tart shell filled with nutella, but no - Nutella Tartine is brioche that has been lightly toasted under the broiler, then brushed with melted butter, topped with a spread of marmalade, drizzled with Nutella, then topped with chopped roasted hazelnuts.

I made quite a few substitutions to this recipe to suit what I had around the house.  The brioche became challah (as that is what my supermarket sells), the orange marmalade became grapefruit marmalade, and the chopped roasted hazelnuts became raw sliced almonds.

I didn't think much of this recipe when I read it, but when I had it for brekky - kapow!  It won't win any awards for nutritional value, but as an occasional breakfast treat, it is surprisingly delicious, and I will definitely make this again (but using plain old white bread, a much less expensive option).

Visit the LYL section of the FFwD website to see what the other Doristas thought of this recipe.

My son Matt loves Nutella, I think a big jar of it was the first thing he packed in his suitcase for college this past fall. You make a strong case for eating it on bread (he dips pretzels in it...which was the second thing he packed in his suitcase). I have never had grapefruit marmalade before and now I am craving it...sounds wonderful, must go in search of.

I think I like the idea of a tart shell filled with Nutella better :-)

What an interesting flavor combination! You can't lose with Nutella, but breakfast might be a wee bit early for me.

Grapefruit marmalade is a great twist! I couldn't bear the thought of citrus, so I chickened out with raspberry. Great post!

Your Nutella Tartine looks yummy, I liked it but it's not going to win any awards for a nutritional snack or breakfast that's for sure;-)

I've never heard of a Nutella Tartine before but i'm so excited about trying :) Yummy!

I love nutella but...Mr Bao couldn't find it and got me the Belgian version called Crumpy but I'm sure it'll still work ~

agreed that this recipe doesn't need fancy bread. i toasted my almonds quickly since my broiler was already on ... i recommend the toasty nuts ... it was a nice addition.

I never thought about having Nutella with marmalade, but it does sound like a pretty good breakfast!

I would never have thought to put the Nutella with marmalade. I love chocolate and orange together, though, so I'm definitely going to have to try this out!
